Legitimate Rape?
I've seen the term "Legitimate Rape" mentioned a few times in the last year or so. I wish I was paying more attention as I would be able to pin-point where I first heard it. Suffice to the last time I heard it, spoken was from Todd Akin, and here is the quote:
“It seems to be, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, it’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down.”
How do I begin to look at this statement. First of all, this is not something to which one simply apologizes. This is a spotlight into the mind of the person speaking. This is not a mistake. Sure, in retrospect, he may have wished he did not say it, but it is, in fact, what he believes. Put simply, this is what Todd Akin believes regardless of what the handlers say. To any sane voter, it should disqualify him from the job of law maker. How can he make rational decisions for the populace if he believes things that are simply not true?
The republican right wing party believes that "legitimate rape" does not result in pregnancy. Think about that. Now think about the ramifications of that belief. If a woman gets pregnant from rape, it was not a "legitimate" rape? Who were these doctors who said this? In short, the republicans are showing their true selves.
I long for the days when republicans we dignified people with fiscally conservative values. These days they are religious zealots who would deny healthcare to your grandmother.
Is this REALLY direction in which we want the USA to go?
